Heat Treatment: International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM 15)

Boecker® heat treatments operate by heating a predetermined region for around two hours or more depending on the treated area. All life stages of pests and bugs, from eggs and larvae to adults, are dehydrated and killed by the heat, which is usually between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius.

Boecker’s Heat Treatment process is a highly effective method of pest control that utilizes rapid temperature elevation within a chamber. By raising the temperature to a level that insects and pests cannot survive, this process eliminates the need for chemical treatments. It is a safe and environmentally friendly solution that can be applied to combat various types of pests, with a particular focus on wood-boring insects. This method ensures thorough pest eradication while prioritizing the safety of individuals and the environment.

International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM15)

The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No.15 (ISPM 15) is an International Phytosanitary Measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that “directly addresses the need to treat wood materials of a thickness greater than 6mm, used to ship products between countries.” These guidelines for regulating wood packaging material were designed to protect international trade.

ISPM15 requirements:

  • All countries that have signed up to the scheme have set criteria in which they will accept timber packaging from around the world and how it must be treated.
  • Each country also has set up implementation dates in which their country will only accept certified treated packaging after those dates.
  • While each country signed up to the scheme will accept treated and certified packaging, the packaging must also meet that country’s own import conditions on top of the ISPM15 requirements.
  • Once packaging has been treated and certified under the scheme it remains certified for the lift of the packaging as long as it does not have to be repaired or parts replaced.

Heat treatment is an effective method for combatting stored product pests in wood. By subjecting the infested wood to high temperatures, heat treatment can eliminate pests at all life stages, including eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The heat penetrates the wood, reaching the core and ensuring thorough pest eradication. This method is environmentally friendly, as it does not involve the use of chemicals.

Heat treatment is also effective for removing molds and pathogens. This form of pest management treatment can be safely applied to a wide range of items, goods, and commodities. Best of all, Boecker® heat treatment complies with ISPM 15 standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, provided the equipment and systems used are correctly monitored. Boecker® has extensively trained experts, professional certified Heat Chamber and comprehensive operational and safety procedures.

Insect pests should be exposed to a temperature between 56°C and 60°C. This temperature must be applied until all life stages of the target insect are killed. The time necessary will depend on the type of wood being treated and until the Heat reaches the core of the wood.

By desiccation – it dries them out. Additionally, essential proteins in the body, such as enzymes are denatured and destroyed.

Boecker® heat treatment is usually employed to exterminate stored product pests. However, any type of insect can be treated with heat: If the material/commodities can tolerate Heat without being damaged, then Heat Treatment will be a safe and eco-friendly solution.
